Fall Masterworks Concert

Program

Join the Bountiful Philharmonia at 7pm on Friday, October 3, 2025 for the opening concert of their 2025-2026 season as they present their Fall Masterworks Concert.

Bernstein – Candide Overture

Leonard Bernstein’s sparkling overture bursts with wit and energy, setting the stage for his satirical operetta Candide. Written in 1956, it’s a whirlwind of quicksilver melodies and jazzy orchestration. Bernstein conducted the overture so often that it became one of the most frequently performed American concert openers, often stealing the spotlight from the opera itself.

Khachaturian – Spartacus Suite No. 2

Drawn from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet about the gladiator who led a slave revolt against Rome, Suite No. 2 (1955) combines sweeping romance with thrilling drama. Its famous “Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia” is renowned for its lush, yearning melodies, so cinematic it’s been used in film and television for decades.

Beethoven – Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92

Premiered in 1813, Beethoven’s Seventh is often described as a “symphony of rhythm.” Richard Wagner famously called it “the apotheosis of the dance” because of its driving, almost hypnotic momentum. Its second movement, the Allegretto, was so beloved at the premiere that the audience demanded an immediate encore.
