Darrin Thiriot

Darrin Schreiner Thiriot is the Director of the Bountiful Philharmonia.  He was the Visiting Director of the University of Utah Wind Ensemble and taught Instrumental Rehearsal Techniques for the 2023/2024 school year. He is currently pursuing a DMA in music performance at the University of Utah while teaching Music Technology and Applied Clarinet .  He served as an Adjunct Music Professor at Methodist University in North Carolina for 4 years, teaching Applied Clarinet Studies, Chamber Music, Woodwind Methods, and Music History.

Darrin is a member clarinetist of the Orchestra at Temple Square, a freelance performer, and performs with a local professional Clarinet Quartet- the “Cottonwoods Quartet” which is about to release its first CD around January of 2025.  He has performed, conducted and presented at many conferences including the International Clarinet Conference in Dublin, Ireland, the International Double Reed Convention in New York City, the Utah Clarinet Festival and many other state level educational festivals around the country.  Darrin performs as substitute with the Utah Symphony and was a Utah Symphony Salute to Youth Soloist in his younger years as well as a soloist with the Grand Junction Symphony (CO), the Utah Philharmonia, the University of Utah Wind Symphony and the Utah Youth Symphony.  He served as Principal Clarinet for the Fayetteville Symphony (NC) for seven seasons.  He has also performed with the Richmond Symphony, Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, The Washington Metropolitan Orchestra, and other groups in the Washington D.C. Area. 

Darrin is a retired military officer with 26 years of service to the Nation’s premiere military bands both as a player and conductor.  For the first half of his career he served as a clarinetist and Eb soloist with the Air Force Band in Washington D.C., and the second half as an Army Premier Band Conductor.  He has worked with many professional bands including the Air Force Band Chamber Players, The West Point Band, the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own”, members of the Army Field Band, the Army Ground Forces Band and the 82nd Airborne Division “All-American” Band.  He has coached and worked with numerous K-12 bands, orchestra and choirs in many states as a clinician/conductor. He currently directs the Davis Youth Philharmonic, his fifth Youth Orchestra, previous to youth orchestras in Washington, D.C., New York, and North Carolina.  Darrin was selected to be the clinician for the 2018 Combined United States Embassy Schools High School Music Festival in New Delhi, India where he conducted the Band and Orchestra students.


He holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Utah where he studied clarinet with Kathy Pope and Christie Lundquist. He also holds a Master of Music Degree in Clarinet Performance from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) where he studied with Russell Dagon and Laurie Bloom.  He has had various conducting mentors over the years including Anthony Maiello, Mallory Thompson, Barry Kopetz, and Mark Ely.

Darrin is married to violinist and educator Monica Yardley Thiriot and they have four children and an elderly Corgi.
